The Toyota four-cylinder engine installed in this rig in 1967 was pulled and replaced by a modified Chevrolet 350-cu.
in. small-block V-8 that was sourced from a 1990 Chevrolet C-1500 truck. The engine has undergone a full mechanical rebuild. Originally fed by General Motors throttle-body fuel injection, the engine now sports an aftermarket
system made by AFI that mirrors the original factory components. An AFI computer that manages the system is now located in the glove compartment. The engine is said to start and idle easily without smoke. A heavy-duty Ron Davis aluminum radiator has been installed, with a cooling fan from a Ford Taurus and a GM water pump.
The FJ40 utilizes a four-speed H42 automatic transmission sourced from a 1970s FJ40, along with a Toyota vacuum-shifted transfer case; both are said to function properly without issues. No leaks from the powertrain are reported. The engine bay boasts finned rocker covers and a matching performance air cleaner, and is impressively clean.
